Microsoft Optimizes SAP HANA Performance with SUSE Solutions

Goal

Microsoft aimed to migrate to the cloud to drive digital transformation, simplify data center management, and boost efficiency.

Challenge:

By 2016, Microsoft’s internal IT infrastructure had become complex and costly. Multiple teams managed specialized data centers with one-off processes, making server support, maintenance, and scaling inefficient. Critical SAP workloads relied on dedicated on-premises hardware, creating operational bottlenecks.

Solution:

Bregler, a member of the internal SAP team, the organization adopted a cloud-native strategy using Microsoft Azure. Leveraging SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP applications, enabling standardized, open-source environments for critical workloads

Execution:

The team began by migrating sandbox systems to Azure, rigorously testing for high availability, performance, and scalability. This approach validated that open-source SAP workloads could run reliably in a standardized cloud environment.

Results:

  • 99.98% planned availability for SAP systems
  • Streamlined operations and reduced complexity
  • Efficient, standardized cloud infrastructure with open-source integration

Impact:

The migration demonstrated that enterprise SAP workloads could thrive on Azure using open-source platforms, reinforcing Microsoft’s cloud-first strategy while optimizing costs and operational efficiency.
